Toast to the Bride and
Groom
(Longer,
personalized speech by old friend or relative when bride's
father is present but does not make a speech)
Marie's father,
Mitchell, and her mother, Patricia, have given me the honor of
offering the opportunity to make a speech on this wonderful
occasion and propose a toast to to Marie and and Jonathan.
When I asked why they chose me, Mitch said, because you you
have the loudest voice, and Patricia said, because you tell
the best jokes. I have seen Maria acting in school plays on
many occasions but today she doesn't need to act, she has a
starring role.
Seriously, over
the years I have seen Maria develop many talents and
accomplishments. She has won prizes for drama in school,
been awarded the first grade in drama, studied French and
management, learned how to drive, followed her interests in
traveling, opera and reading historical novels, biographies,
as well as finding time to raise money for charity.
It was while she
was at school, that she met Jonathan who was studying.
Though Jonathan
had not yet qualified as a doctor, it was obvious that they
had much in common. (Or: At first it didn't look as if
they had much in common.) But as they got to know each other
Maria discovered that Jonathan liked the arts as much as the
sciences. And Jonathan learned that Maria could speak fluent
French. And when Jonathan learned that Maria had the best
collection of Beatles records, that clinched it.
These young
people have a bright future ahead of them, and wonderful
career planned in New York. And I am sure you will want to
join me in wishing them every success and happiness in their
new venture and marriage. Please raise your glasses and drink
to the health and prosperity of Maria and Jonathan. (Pause.)
To Maria and Jonathan.
