Speech Delivery Tips
So you've
decided that you want to write a speech and you've
probably found plenty of books that can help! ForeverWed
would like to help skip over all the book reading and
provide you with some useful tips to help you on your way.
Should you read your speech or memorize it?
Not very many
people are willing willing to trust everything to their
memory. One approach we would suggest would be to
familiarize yourself with your speech and then write a set
of brief notes on index cards. This will ensure that your
speech won't sound as though its been pre written.
Rehearse! Rehearse! Rehearse!
Make sure that
you rehearse your pre written speech. Read it aloud in
front of a mirror, in the car pool, anywhere, until you
can't stand repeating anymore! By that time you should
have memorized!
Take your Time...
Rushing through the speech when your nervous can
ruin a speech. Especially when your running through it
too fast! Take time to breath, be relaxed. If your the
nervous type then look out towards someone you know very
well and act as though your giving the speech just to
them. Don't give in to racing through the speech. Even
professional speakers have a tendency to want to rush the
speech.
Your Motions speaks louder than words.
A confident
speaker stands tall and enunciates every word. They look
their audience in the eye, keeping eye contact as much as
possible. This allows for a connection from you to the
guests. It also gives them the impression that your
speaking to them directly, as an individual..
Jokes
and Humor
If you are wanting your audience to laugh at your jokes,
take deep breath, and wait for it. If they don't respond
just keep moving on with your speech. If you need some
ideas on humor, rent a few Christian comedy tapes and
watch how they work the crowd... We're sure you'll find a
few jokes you can use too!
Handling
any situation -
Most weddings don't go interrupted but when they do they
provide thinking time for you to bring them back with the
laughs. People will remember you for what you said, not
how you said it..
Two final
important points to remember:
1. The
guests are on your side! most of them are probably close
family and friends... They've been looking forward to
enjoying your speech - give them the opportunity
2. If you
get a totally unexpected laugh - laugh back and keeping
giving the speech!
