TOAST TO THE
BRIDE AND GROOM
(Relative's/friend's speech when the bride's father
is recently deceased. )
It is my great pleasure to be here with you
on this happy occasion and to help Maria and Jonathan celebrate their marriage. I have
known Maria and her parents for many years, since they came to live in Washington.
Maria's late father, Mitchell, used to
enjoy a game of golf on Saturday afternoons, and we spent many happy hours together
sailing often accompanied by Jonathan. I remember Mitch saying that
Jonathan seemed to
be a very hard-working, ambitious, talented young man. I know Mitch and
Jonathan got on
well and Mitch would have been delighted to have seen this happy day. Although we miss
Mitch's presence, and his unfailing good humor, we know that he was looking forward to
this wedding and we have fulfilled his hopes and wishes, and in a sense he is with us here
today in our memories of him.
He would have been very satisfied to know what a comfort
Jonathan has
been to our family, how understanding, how supportive a friend in time of need, a valuable
help to us in everything from fixing the car, taking over day to day decisions affecting
the business, to just being there when we wanted advice and assistance. The wedding was
postponed, but Maria is a girl well worth waiting for. Doesn't she look like a beautiful
picture today? Mitch would have been proud of her, as I am sure
Jonathan is. And it is
with every confidence that I tell you I am sure that this young couple will have a very
happy marriage, and I would ask you to join me in wishing them both a long, happy, and
prosperous future together. Please stand and lift your glasses. I propose a toast to Maria
and Jonathan. (Lift glass in air and wait for everybody to stand and raise glasses.)
To Maria and Jonathan.
