TOAST TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM
(Suitable for an older man addressing a large ,distinguished audience.)

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is always a pleasure to attend a wedding. They say that the world loves a lover and I think this is true. Marriage is the expression of love, and also the start of a lifelong adventure. Plato said, 'The beginning is the most important part of the work'. If that is the case, then Maria and Jonathan have been fortunate in enjoying the most wonderful beginning. They already have most of the good gifts one would wish upon a young couple. Maria is a beautiful bride, Jonathan is a handsome husband, and both come from secure family homes where their parents have set examples of what a good marriage should be.

A good marriage is not something you can create on your own without help from your partner. It is a joint venture. Marriage is like a journey in a boat. You cannot drill a hole in the boat and when water floods in say to your companion, 'It's nothing to do with you, the water is coming in on my side of the boat.' You must row in the same direction. In fact love has been defined as not looking at each other, but looking in the same direction.

If marriage is a boat, then many of us are in the same boat! Maria and Jonathan, you are embarking on a wonderful journey, and you have many friends who will support you, and help you, and wish you well. I would now like to ask everyone in this room to stand with me, and raise their glasses. (Pause briefly until noise of moving chairs ceases.) I propose a toast to the long life, health, wealth, and happy marriage, of Maria and Jonathan.
