I was looking through some of the wedding song lists and it occurred to me
that several of the songs that were listed were really not appropriate for
weddings. Example: Celine Dion, Because You Loved Me. It's about a past
relationship. Another one listed was Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love
You. If bittersweet memories are all she is taking with her, then how can it
be appropriate for a wedding song? More Than Words by Extreme--This is so funny to hear because it basically says, don't tell me you love, just do me.

Are there any more out there to watch out for?

Thanks,

Amber that is very very true

But...... it also comes down to what you want to be played at the wedding!

there are millions that can be said that are not suitable so it really comes down to a "Do Not Playlist" on your side that they do not play on the night

other than that not much else I can tell you

Believe it or not, I'd have to say "the Macarena" But everybody loves it. The lyrics are awful. They talk about this girl who wants to dump her boyfriend. Shouldn't a wedding be a time where people are supposed to be coming together and not a time to talk about "getting dumped?" Everybody loves to do the dance to it though. If I'm asked I'll play the Spanish version, which is just as fun, usually most of the people I serve don't speak Spanish, so they don't hear the whole part about "getting dumped" They just go through the motions and have fun.
I agree songs in the past tense are not usually good if you really think about it. For Amber's purposes, there could be volumes on songs to watch out for though. Most often it will be the music that most remember over the words, but I can appreciate the concern over having clean lyrics. Weeding them out is not an easy job. For instance in my mainstream music subscriptions, one compilation came in with 20 songs on it. 5 of the songs had objectionable content, whether it was graphic descriptions like involving violence, damage or curse words. Weddings are supposed to be pure, so why splash colorful metaphores around? That doesn't leave a good impression on the guests about the newly married couple or the DJ. I'm opposed to the playing of Rap-hip hop at weddings. I just don't see it as "elegant" Though some folks might like it, many don't and it turns off older guests quickly. Grandma and Grandpa will be the first to leave, followed by the 40/50 somethings and then the DJ is there trying to cater to 1/2 the crowd with everybody coming up to him saying "why don't you play something we can dance to?"
It's important to know your crowd and to know how you want to represent your newly married self to them. The more cavalier and brash you are at your party, the less likely it will be that you hear from as many of them afterwards. Cavalier and Brash is bad. But be reflectant of yourselves and your new found happiness.
