Hello,
A hat is a nice option to a veil for an informal wedding, particularly an outdoor event. Usually, the bride wears the hat during most of the reception, but she can remove it if she chooses (just as most brides remove their veils for the reception), particularly if the brim is wide enough to interfere with dancing or standing near the groom to cut the cake, etc.
Choose a lightweight, pliable hat rather than a heavy one.
"Hat hair" will be a problem, so you might want to bring a comb and hair spray so you can repair any damage when the hat is removed.
