The bridesmaids can have as much responsibility as you want them to have, depending on the circumstances. Technically, they walk down the aisle and stand in line during the ceremony, and that is about it. However, most bridesmaids like to be involved in the festivities and are willing to help however needed. You can ask them to help with decorating or other activites. They may also give a shower, either with the maid of honor, or individually if they want to, but it isn't required.
