As a bridesmaid, you may have a shower, but you are not required to have one. However, the one person who should not host a shower is the mother of the bride. She can help someone/ones in the background, but her name should not appear on the invitation. If you feel that the bride would understand your concerns, you might mention to her that mothers don't host showers and ask if her mother would like help from you and the bridesmaids. Depending on the mother's personality, however, she may have very definite ideas of what she wants and you may become frustrated trying to work with her.
Another option is to tell the bride that you and the other bridesmaids were really looking forward to hosting a shower and suggest that you have one for friends and if her mother insists on having one, that it be for family. The bride may enjoy having two smaller showers where she can spend more time with her guests. |
