Sandals (Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios;
tel. 800/SANDALS in the U.S.)--These resorts for male/female couples pride
themselves on providing an all-inclusive environment where food and drink are spread out
in abundance and you never have to carry cash or worry about tipping. Enthusiastic members
of the staff bring heroic amounts of community spirit and enthusiasm to any weddings
celebrated on-site. All of these resorts can provide a suitable setting, but the most
favored ones are Sandals Royal Jamaican at Montego Bay and Sandals Dunn's River at Ocho
Rios.
Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club (Montego Bay; tel. 800/626-0592
in the U.S. or 876/953-2211)--This resort offers honeymooners deluxe ocean-view rooms
fronting a near-perfect crescent-shaped beach. Newlyweds who didn't blow all their money
on the wedding can opt for one of the large private "cottages," complete with
their own swimming pool. Although there are plenty of nooks and crannies where you can
retreat for romantic interludes, this is also the resort of choice for honeymooners who
want lots of activities, such as aerobics, tennis, swimming, and, most definitely, golf.
Jake's (Treasure Beach; tel. 800/OUTPOST)--Funky and
idiosyncratic, this is the offbeat choice of Jamaica for a honeymoon. No one will find you
here, even the most intrepid of mothers-in-law. On the South Coast, and set adjacent to a
rocky beach, this place is small scale and intensely personal, calling to mind something
in the deserts of Morocco.
Jamaica Inn (Ocho Rios; tel. 800/837-4608 in the
U.S., or 876/974-2514)--At one of the great hotels of the island, the "White
Suite" is secluded on the brink of a promontory (Winston Churchill slept here), and
it's quite a swanky place for a honeymoon if you can afford it. Otherwise, there are
plenty of other spacious and classic rooms in which to begin your married life. The resort
opens onto a private cove with powdery champagne-colored sand. The inn, with its colonial
aura and a certain degree of formality, is a real contrast to the more free-for-all
Sandals properties where anything (well, almost) goes.
Ciboney Ocho Rios (Ocho Rios; tel. 800/333-3333 in
the U.S., or 876/974-1027)--The honeymoon villas at this stately, plantation-style spa and
beach resort are set on lush hillside acreage and are perfect private retreats for
newlyweds. Each has a private attendant and pool. Guests are pampered here with
complimentary massages, pedicures, and manicures. A private beach is reached by shuttle as
the resort is not on the water. The resort is all-inclusive, and there's a range of sports
facilities, such as tennis courts--but you'll be able to find some privacy to be with your
new spouse.
The Enchanted Garden (Ocho Rios; tel. 800/847-2535
in the U.S., or 876/974-1400)--The island's most romantic retreat seems to have been
designed just for honeymooners looking for their own Garden of Eden. Tropical plants and
flowers are spread across some 20 acres of gardens, along with a series of waterfalls and
streams. The rooms may be a bit small, but 30 come with their own private plunge pool. A
shuttle will transport you to the nearest beach. Some of the resort's drinking and dining
choices evoke Arabian Nights, which should put you in a romantic mood.
Breezes Golf and Beach Resort (Runaway Bay; tel. 876/973-2436)--Lying
6 miles west of Ocho Rios, this all-inclusive hotel re-creates the South Seas but on
Jamaican soil. It is stylish with luxurious accommodations and good food. One of the best
gyms is found here, and activities even include reggae classes.
Trident Villas & Hotel (Port Antonio; tel. 876/993-2602)--Here
you can follow in the footsteps of that perpetual honeymooner, the late actor Errol Flynn.
Poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox called Port Antonio "the most exquisite on earth," and
if you're here there's no better hideaway than this posh hotel, enjoying a 14-acre setting
on a rocky bluff at the edge of the Caribbean. White cottages and villas are staggered
about the property to ensure maximum privacy. The main building has an English
country-house tradition with formal service; the bedrooms feel very private and quiet,
with only the sounds of the pounding surf, a large paddle fan, and pillow talk.
