Six Steps to lovely feet

Treat yourself to this at-home pedicure

Keep your feet beautiful with a quick and easy home pedicure. Since everything you need can be found in a drugstore or beauty supply store, you can give your feet salon-style pampering for less than $20. Here's how:

1. Heat 1/2 gallon of whole milk until it's warm, but not hot, then combine it in a bowl with just enough water to cover your feet. Add two drops of almond extract. The lactic acid in the whole milk acts as a gentle exfoliant to soften your feet, and the almond extract also helps to soften the skin, according to Marcia Kilgore, founder of Bliss Spa in New York City.

2. Remove your old nail polish, then trim the nails straight across with a nail clipper or manicure scissors. File to a square shape with an emery board.

3. Apply a cuticle cream or oil to the cuticles, and gently push them back with an orange stick.

4. With a pumice stone, gently sand away the calluses on your feet. Follow with a foot cream to help keep skin soft, says Lucy Presneanu, a pedicurist at the Kim Lepine New York Salon in New York City.

5. Mix a handful of coarse salt with enough olive oil to make a paste. Spread this mixture over your feet and calves, and rub gently to exfoliate and moisturize, says Kilgore. Finish by wiping away any remaining salt grains with a warm, damp cloth. Or try a ready-made version such as Bliss Hot Salt Scrub, available through www.blissworld.com  or by calling toll-free (888) 243-8825.

6. Finish by polishing your nails. Use a base coat, two coats of your favorite color, and a top coat.

Repeat these steps every 2 to 3 weeks.
