The Perfect polish remover

What's the best choice in nail polish removers? Actually, it’s a trade-off. Acetone versions remove every last trace of pigment, but they can dry out nails and cuticles, eventually causing them to crack, peel, or split. Nonacetone removers are gentler, but they sometimes leave behind a hint of color.

However, unless you use either type more than once a week, you shouldn’t have a problem, says Marianne O’Donoghue, associate professor of dermatology at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago.

Still concerned? Look for some of the newer products like Hardware Odorless Nail Color Remover Gel or Once Removed. Both wipe away any trace of polish with a particularly soothing oily solvent.

Whichever you choose, O’Donoghue advises letting your nails go bare for at least 24 hours between manicures. Use the time to massage a rich hand lotion or, better yet, petroleum jelly into nails and cuticles to keep them soft and hydrated.
