Foot massage techniquesThe perfect
foot massage in four easy steps
Every time you run, you transfer hundreds of pounds of
pressure to your feet. No wonder one of your nightly rituals includes begging your partner
to rub your feet. Whaaat? Your honey doesn't have the right touch? Not to worry. We asked
Laura Pudloski, a neuromuscular therapist who massages the feet of most of the RUNNER'S
WORLD staff, to share her no-fail tips for giving the perfect foot massage.
Step 1: The bottom of the foot
Sit facing your partner's feet. After warming a little
lotion in your hands, place your thumbs on the heel of one foot. Apply thumb pressure to
the underside of the foot, starting at the bottom and gliding your thumbs toward the toes.
Step 2: The heel
Lubricate and massage the entire heel (including the sides)
with your thumbs. Use gentle pressure as heels are often tender.
Step 3: The top of the foot
After lubricating the area, place four fingers in one of
the grooves between the bones on the top of the foot. Gently massage downward, toward the
ankle. Do this between all the midfoot bones.
Step 4: "Milking" the foot
Position both hands on one foot, with your fingers
underneath and your thumbs on top. one hand at a time, apply pressure and stroke the foot
by sliding your hands toward the toes. |
