Planning: Medieval Wedding Theme Ideas

Q.
Our fall, medieval type wedding will be
next October. We plan to use carved pumpkins and gords for some of the
decorations (to hold votives etc).
We would like to carve these items a good 4-5 days before the wedding
but are concerned that they will start to rot.
How long before these items are carved do they need to be used and,
what, if anything can we do to preserve their life. (I can just
picture me and my bridesmaids, the night before the wedding, carving
pumpkins!!!) NOT a pretty picture.

The pumpkins should be lovely.
The length of time that they will keep depends on where you live
and the temperature. If you can store them outdoors where it will
be cold, but not freezing, they should be okay for 3 or 4 days. If
you live in an area where it might be fairly warm and humid, such
as Florida, you will need to find a large refrigerator for them.
Otherwise, they will begin to mold in a day or two and that isn't
a pretty sight. If you are concerned about them molding, look
around this year and see if you can find ceramic pumpkins or
another substitute, perhaps on sale this year at a good price.
