Invitations Q & A:  Writing Salutations

Answers to your most important wedding invitations questions

Its our step by step guide to wedding invitations.  No matter the style, we've got an example or answer for you

The following information is articles, questions, and answers that have been submitted by ForeverWed readers.  Should these not answer your questions. Feel free to ask an expert.

Writing Salutations
In written communication, when you address a married couple, what is the correct form to use for a salutation.  Assume they are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smith.  The wife's name is Susan.  You know the couple well.  Is the salutation "Dear Richard and Susan" or "Dear Susan and Richard"?  What is the rule of etiquette that determines whether the man's name or the woman's name comes first in the salutation of the letter?

When you know the couple well, it is acceptable to use their first names, with the lady's name first, so Dear Susan and Richard.  If you don't know them well, then you would say, "Dear Mr. & Mrs. Jones" with the man's title first.  It may help to think of the term "ladies first" when you use first names.
