I need to create a suitable and sturdy cake stand.  I haven't seen very nice metal cake stands on the internet.  These are much simpler to deal with than cake pillars and the like for the non-professional.  I have looked at possibly using wooden balustrades or some other support for each cake platter and arranging them in stair-step fashion.  I have not yet come up with something satisfactory.  The middle tier, I think, should be recessed just slightly below the upper tier. Any ideas for a way to create a nice cake stand.  I cannot purchase the ones I have seen and have been unable to find a local business to rent one.  I would appreciate any ideas in this area or regarding cake display

You are right to be concerned about the stability of your cake display. In interviewing brides for my book, A Bride's Touch, cake and cake top problems were quite common.   With my own clients, I always caution them to be conservative in their cake displays because a cake disaster can be very disappointing and distracting.

A good friend of mine is a cake designer, and she no longer stacks cakes at all.   She favors more of a staggered-height arrangement on separate pedestals like you seem to be describing.  She also is very strict about the weight of cake tops she will include actually ON cakes.

You didn't mention where you are located, but I'm a little surprised you cannot find rental cake supports.  But there are lots of options, especially if you think it through creatively.  Your idea of wooden supports is an interesting one, as long as the uprights are securely screwed (probably better than nailing) to both the top and a wide bottom-- and the circumference of the top and bottom is not too wide. The entire structure could be painted to suit your wedding style and that could work fine.

The closer the cakes are to the tabletop, however, the safer they are. And that's something to keep in mind. I have seen very nice cake presentations made using shorter risers of sturdy materials (like Styrofoam, wood blocks, overturned flat-bottomed bowls or vases) in varying heights.  The risers were covered in fabric, with the cakes set on plates or decorative covered cake boards/cardboards on top.  It's a very inexpensive, but practical and attractive way to display the cakes.  You might consider some arrangement like this, too.
