A Guide to Wedding Clothes
With so many styles, colors, and
accessories to choose from, couples can easily be overcome with
decisions about proper attire for their wedding. Following is a
simple guide to wedding clothes for everyone from brides to
guests.
It covers from semi-formal
day wedding to very formal evening ceremonies.
Traditional Formal
Evening:
Brides -
Brides should wear a dress with a long train.
The veil is often the same length as the train. The gown should
have long sleeves or the bride can wear gloves. A full bouquet or
a prayer book is appropriate.
Groom -
The groom should wear black full-dress tuxedos (tail coats) with
white pique vest and tie and a pique wing-collar shirt. Gloves are
optional.
Ushers -
Ushers and groomsmen should Dress the same the groom.
Fathers -
Both fathers should dress either the same as the groom, or in a
classic tuxedo.
Bridesmaids -
Between four and twelve attendants, including the honor attendant
is appropriate. Bridesmaids should be dressed in long dresses.
Gloves are optional.
Mothers -
Mothers may wear either long or short evening dresses. The colors
should complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. An evening hat is an
option.
Guests -Women
should wear long or short evening dresses. Men should wear
tuxedos. (You may specify "black tie" on the invitations)
Formal Evening:
Brides -Bride’s
gowns should be long with a chapel, sweep, or detachable train.
Any length veil is appropriate and other accessories are the same
as for a very formal evening.
Groom -
The groom may wear a black tuxedo or tail coat, a white or ivory
shirt, and a bow tie with a vest or cummerbund in black or a color
to accentuate bridesmaids dresses.
Ushers -
Ushers can be the same as the groom, or, if the groom is in tails,
groomsmen and ushers can be in a matching style tuxedo.
Fathers -
Fathers may dress the same as the ushers, or in a classic tuxedo.
Bridesmaids -
Between two and six attendants is customary. Dresses may be
similar to very formal, or they may be short. Gloves are optional.
Mothers -
Either long or short dresses are appropriate as
well as an evening suit.
Guests -
Guests should dress the same as for very formal
evening (you may specify "black tie" on invitations).
Traditional Formal Daytime:
Brides -
Brides may dress the same as for a very formal evening although a
shorter train is also appropriate.
Groom -
The groom should wear a cutaway style coat in charcoal gray,
striped or matching trousers, white or pique shirt with wing
collar, a pearl or doeskin vest, and a striped ascot or
four-in-hand tie. A paisley ascot may be substituted for the
striped one.
Ushers -
Groomsmen and ushers can match the groom in
cutaways and use either an ascot (like the groom) or a
four-in-hand tie. Matching strollers are also appropriate instead
of the cutaway coat.
Fathers -
Fathers can dress same as the groom, same as the ushers, or in a
classic tuxedo.
Bridesmaids -
Rules for bridesmaids are the same as for a very formal evening
wedding with the exception that dresses may be less elaborate.
Mothers -
Mothers may dress in either long or short dresses.
Guests -
For women, short dresses or daytime suits are appropriate. Men
need to wear suits.
Formal Daytime:
Brides -
Brides should dress the same as formal evening
or in a shorter dress that may have a detachable train.
Groom - The groom may wear
a gray stroller with striped pants, pearl gray or doeskin vest and
four-in-hand tie over a white shirt.
Ushers - Ushers and
groomsmen should dress the same as the groom.
Fathers - Fathers should
dress the same as ushers and groom.
Bridesmaids - Bridesmaids
dresses can be either long or short, but not too elaborate.
Mothers - Mothers may wear
elegant dresses or suits.
Guests - Women may wear
daytime dresses or suits and men should wear suits.

be traditional or contemporary, very formal or semi-formal, this

aware of current standards of etiquette. Customs and attire differ
across the country and from culture to culture. Ultimately, styles
