Romantic Ring Pillow
Wedding Crafts by Lucinda Ganderton
From Krause Publications
submitted by http://www.sewing.org/

The continuous knot design appliqud to this lace-edged ring pillow is a time honored Celtic symbol of never-ending love, which has been used to decorate love tokens from Valentines to wedding quilts for very many years.

Supplies:

  • 6in square of fusible web
  • 6 in square of cream stain
  • 9x16in of pale cream damask
  • 30in of 3/4in wide lace edging
  • 24x33in of batting
  • 2 yrds of 3in wide dobule0degled lace
  • Selection of small silk flowers
  • 12in of 1/8in wide cream ribbon
  • Matching sewing thread sewing machine basic sewing kit

Project time 4 hours

  1. Draw the knot motif from the Templates section onto fusible web and iron it to the wrong side of the satin. Cut out carefully alone the pencil outline. Cut the damask into two 8x9 in rectangles. Remove the backing paper from the fusible web and iron the knot centrally onto one of the pieces of damask.
  2. Thread the sewing machine with matching thread and set to a narrow satin stitch. Sew over the edges of the motif, following the interlacing lines on the template.
  3. Cut a length of the narrow lace to fit along each side of the pillow front, and pin in place 3/4in from edge with the scallops facing inward. Stitch down. With right sides facing, sew the back and front of the pillow together along three sides.
  4. To make the pillow form cut, twelve pieces of batting; four 8x9 in, four 7x8 in, and four 6x7 in. Sandwich together, with the smallest pieces on the inside, then sew around the outside edges. Insert the form into the pillow cover and slip stitch the fourth side together.
  5. Sew the two ends of the wide lace together to form a loop, fold into four, and mark the quarters with pins. Sew four gathering threads around the lace between the pins, about 1/4in in from the edge. Pin the quarter marks to the corners of the pillow and draw up the gathers. Pin and stitch the lace along the seam lines.
  6. Pin, then hand stitch two or three small silk flowers securely to each corner of the pillow.
  7. Fold the narrow ribbon in half and sew to the center of the satin know. This will be used to tie the rings to the pillow before the wedding ceremony. A loop of tape can be attached to the back of the pillow to make it easier for the ring bearer to carry.
