Give the Gift of your Culture
Anybody can buy a toaster or set of
glasses as a wedding gift, but why not consider a gift that reflects
and glorifies our African-American culture? The list below offers a
number of unique and affordable gift ideas for the bride and groom.
A set of picture frames in various sizes, with African
carvings or lined with African fabric. If you can't locate one at a
specialty shop near you, consider buying a few yards of material and
having a seamstress do the job for you.
Gift certificate to a Black-owned restaurant or establishment.
This is a nice idea because it's a perfect opportunity to support
Black businesses.
Kinara for celebrating Kwanzaa .
Kinaras are not only used at Kwanzaa time, they are attractive and
meaningful year round. If the couple is not familiar with Kwanzaa,
purchasing a book about the celebration.
Gift set of Afrocentric stationery.
Make sure the set includes a nice variety of elements: notecards,
plain paper, envelopes, and thank you cards.
Subscription to a Black magazine.
Another opportunity to support a Black-owned publication. Consider the
couple's interests and lifestyle before deciding on which one.
Black art.
Find your nearest Black art gallery or store, and choose from prints,
sculptures, carvings, and masks. (Note: We recommend you try this only
if you know the couple's tastes well)
Tablecloth made of African fabric
with a set of candles.
Coffee table book of African-American art or culture
or something relating to black culture.
Book of African folktales or proverbs
the couple can read together.
If you don’t mind doing a little extra work for the happy couple,
be creative and incorporate African touches in traditional gifts, such
as (neatly) sewing borders of African fabric around a new set of
towels, table or bed linen, or perhaps adding gold ribbon and cowry
shells to scented candles…use your imagination to bring a little
culture (and joy) into a new marriage!
